Summer Dresses and Tops in Plus Size Styles: End of Summer Means Sales
by Tina Boomerina (Christina Gregoire)
The end of summer is the perfect time to find cute dresses and tops on sale. Smart women, like you and me, already know about that, and end-of-season sales can be a great time to shop. But, we also know that we can’t wait too long or our sizes will be gone. So, if you need some new outfits for an upcoming cruise or a warm-weather vacation, you should be browsing online before everything good disappears.
Hopefully, by the time you’re ready to do some serious shopping, all of the adorable warm-weather tops and dresses will be on the internet “discount rack”.
Plus Size Summer Clothing for Baby Boomer Women
If you’re like me, you might be a bit surprised to find yourself a plus size… as in… you know… “fat”.
How the heck did THAT happen? I know I didn’t plan on becoming heavier.
It seems like it was just a few years ago that I couldn’t find clothes in my size because I was too skinny. And, then… over the years… I gained a pound here and a pound there… and… all of a sudden… SHAZZAM… my waistline disappeared.
You may have a different story. Maybe your butt got a wee bit cushier and your hips got a teeny-tiny bit wider… and then… holyhell… all of a sudden you saw a fat lady in the mirror.
And, I can’t even begin to wrap my brain around the fact that I’m 61 years old. What? Who… me? In my mind, I was always around 40-ish. So, it’s just not possible that I’m actually in my SIXTIES! Right? Is this some kind of cosmic joke? It’s so confusing. It’s so impossible. It’s just bizarre…
What happened? I went to sleep and bingo… I woke up… old.
Is it Time for a Muumuu?
So… I guess I’m just an old-ish, fat-ish white woman. Should I just give up? Should I buy a muumuu, eat bon bons all day, and soap operas?
I, sometimes, find myself checking out adorable outfits in the junior’s departments and lusting after them… like I’m ever going to fit into clothes like that in this lifetime. Well, maybe if I got some dreadful disease, I would lose a lot of weight and the day before I died, that size 8 would fit me perfectly… and I would look super hot.
It’s True: I am Fat Because…
It’s not really me that’s fat… it’s my medications. If I could stop taking a few of my meds, I’d be about a size 8… maybe even a size 6. Seriously. It’s happened before.
I’ve stopped those medications before and I lost 30 pounds almost overnight. Unfortunately, it’s not worth it. I don’t want to be skinny if I have to pay for it in migraines. So… I guess it’s Muumuu City for me.
Thank God, I can wear muumuus year round - even in the colder months - because I have hot flashes.
Okay, it’s not Muumuu City for me… not quite yet.
I’m not going to give up and become my 300-pound grandma. Hey, I’m about a size 12 or 14… so it’s not THAT hopeless. I CAN find cute clothes in my size… that I can afford… if it’s a full moon… and if it’s Tuesday… and if a spotted owl is flying over my house… backwards.
Boomers Love Shopping Online
Fortunately, I love looking around online for cute clothes for myself… and for you. It’s true. I’m always looking for clothing that might look good on you… or rather… might look good on the majority of women.
It’s not like I have no taste. I have exceptional taste. And if I win the lottery, I’ll get a chance to prove it to you.
However, I’m also very good at taking inexpensive clothing and punking it out with a hat, some high platform sandals, a few layered necklaces, and several other cool embellishments. I’m the kind of woman who looks good in quirky things.
Most of you could throw on a garbage bag and look good… feminine… cute… good enough to walk into a grocery store without small children running out screaming. Not me.
And, that’s why I’m so good at picturing what will look good on you. I’ve had to teach myself to be creative. Necessity is the mother of invention. Well, The Mothers of Invention are the mothers of invention. (If you’re not old enough to know who Frank Zappa was, just ignore this line.)
Relaxed Fit Summer Dresses for Plus Size Women
I happen to know that even plus-size women like to breathe, so if you’re as gol-danged old as I am and you have an apple-shaped body, you’ll probably want to find dresses that have a relaxed, swing shape. In other words, muumuus. But… not muumuus. Clothes that feel like muumuus but don’t look like them, such as the coral-colored party dress at the top of the page.
If you carry your weight on your lower half, you’ll probably be happiest with a dress that’s fitted on top and loose below the waist, such as the white floral dress at the top of the page.
… But, you already knew that. However, there might be a pop quiz someday. So, I decided to give you a quick review.
I like all the plus-size tops and dresses on this page. I would wear any one of them if they fit me. And, you… you should be looking around online right now… just in case you find a cheap cruise to the Bahamas.
