Jitterbug Plus – Best Senior Cell Phone Gift for Older Mom or Dad
by Tina Boomerina (Christina Gregoire)
Are you trying to come up with a great gift for your old mom or dad (or your grandma or grandpa) for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas or some milestone birthday… and you want something that's cool, but not a huge waste of money? Well, check out the Jitterbug Plus Cell Phone or one of those other senior phones that uses new technology to help OldFarts with accessibility issues.
I’m going to focus on the Jitterbug Plus because it is reputed to be the best phone and it has medical alert features if you buy their upgraded plans. I'm not saying that you should buy a Jitterbug. It depends on what you need and what you can afford.
According to pcmag.com, "The Samsung Jitterbug Plus from GreatCall is the best simple phone there is." However, I don't get paid to say good things about any product (ever), it's just that Jitterbug by Samsung is "state of the art," if you can call a retro phone "state of the art."
Easy to Use Cell Phone for Seniors
Teenagers and thirty-to-forty-somethings may want the latest SmartPhone that does everything except fly them to the moon, but all grandma and grandpa want is something easy to use… a plain, simple phone with limited features… designed for technophobes who grew up longing for the day when something like the Dick Tracy radio watch would become a reality.
Just a Simple Freaking Cell Phone… That Takes Pictures
The Jitterbug phone is so easy to use, even a grandparent can figure it out. Grandma doesn’t have to know how to program her phone numbers into the phone book. She can just hit “O” and the operator will do it for her. Or, if she can’t handle that, someone like a grandchild could call for her.
It’s not that older people don’t want to have cell phones with video capabilities and internet access. I'm sure your grandma would love to play with all those awesome features, if she could just figure out how to use them. And, if she could just figure out how to remember how to use them after her four-year-old grandson has explained everything to her… fifteen times.
Jitterbug Plus Phone Features
Some of the coolest features of the Jitterbug are extra add-ons which come with extra fees, so if you don’t want those extras, such as the medical alert, you may be better off with a different phone and, of course, you should compare the monthly costs for various plans.
Phone accessibility products change all the time. I should know. This article is a rewrite of one of my old articles from a couple of years ago… and there are enough changes on the Jitterbug that I have to do a little research myself.
Here are some of Jitterbug Plus's helpful hardware features:
- Huge buttons – Easy to read numbers and easy to press buttons
- Backlit buttons – Works at night or in dim light
- Large fonts – Easy to read screen
- Bright color screen – Better contrast
- Clearer sound – Hearing aid compatibility - If you can get your stubborn OldFart to use his/her hearing aid.
- Voice dialing – Might be good for really old people who talk to themselves... lol.
- Long lasting battery – Up to 25 days on standby battery
- Easy to use camera – Two-step process for photo sharing to Facebook, Shutterfly, and Picasa (article continues)
