Everything You Need to Know About Baby Boomers
by Tina Boomerina (Christina Gregoire)
Here is everything you've ever wanted to know or needed to know about Baby Boomers if you're into advertising, marketing, or social networking. Okay, that's a bit of a lie, but this article might help some of you understand just a little bit more about my cohort. For example, the Baby Boomers include such a huge group of people that they are broken up into two categories.
Wikipedia keeps trying to define the first wave as Baby Boomers and the second wave as Generation Jones. But, I call them Beatle Boomers and Disco Boomers.
I know that some younger Boomers hate being called Disco Boomers, but Generation Jones is worthless... and, it just hastn't caught on and Zoomers sounds like crazy people on speed. So, until someone comes up with something better, I'm going to hijack the younger group and call them Disco Boomers because, for better or worse, the younger cohort grew up with disco. (My apologies to you punk rockers... I was an older, married punk enthusiast myself... California Über Alles.)
Hey, music is the ONE thing that all Boomers have in common. We didn't have the internet or text messaging or personal phones or online games. We sort of communicated through music... and we bonded through music. And, Baby Boomers had a cool soundtrack to accompany their lives...until Echo Boomers came up with rap. (Just kidding. I like a fair amount of rap.)
If You're Too Young to Be a Boomer
I understand that if you are a Gen X or a Gen Y or a Gen Whatever, you think that reading about Baby Boomers is boring… until you want to reach into our fat purses and wallets through advertising or social networking.
Then, you want to know everything you can about this crazy, overpowering, boring, loving, rebellious, traditional bunch of left-wing, right-wing, ex-hippies, ex-punkers, ex-librarians, and other groovy peeps who are now in their forties, fifties, and sixties.
I left out a lot of brilliant adjectives, but if you have gotten the impression that Baby Boomers are not one big homogenous slice of tart apple pie, you would be right. People in their 40s are not seniors. People in their 60s have never seen a mosh pit. And, some Boomers (quite a few) have lead quiet, complacent lives raising their kids… and you might be one of those kids. So, don't disrespect your elders... kidding.
Baby Boomer Statistic: The Baby Boomer Years
Yes, these numbers are boring, but there will be a quiz, so take notes.
Statisticians say that the Baby Boom started in 1946 after soldiers came home from World War Two (3.4 million births that year) and the Boom ended in 1964 (4 million births). This adds up to almost 80 million Baby Boomers. And, Boomers will be somewhere between 49 and 67 years old in 2013.
Okay, I happen to have fallen right into the middle of the boom, between the Beatle Boomers and the Disco Boomers, so I understand both cohorts and here's my best attempt at Cliff Notes:
Beatle Boomer Cohort #1 (born 1946 – 1955) was around for Beatlemania, Mod-Carnaby-Street clothing for men and women, Vietnam, Free Love, Jimi Hendrix, Flower Power, and all the fun stuff you think of when you try to imagine Boomers.
Disco Baby Boomer Cohort #2 (born 1956 – 1964) was in their formative years during disco, Watergate, and a lot of other boring stuff. (You know you're a Disco Boomer if you can find Leif "What's His Name" in a group of leisure-suited singers.) Well, punk music was around during the school years of Disco Boomers, but I basically think of Disco Boomers as conformists (please click to continue to page two)
