Chic Polka Dot Clothing for Women: The New Black (and White)
by Christina Gregoire
Alexandra Stoddard, in one of her great design books, says that women should collect polka dot scarves because they are timeless and can be used as neckwear, belts, and hat trimmings. Well, she's right. Baby Boomer women over 50 or 60 look great in polka dot clothing.... dresses, tops, scarves, hats, shoes, purses... and just everything.
I have two polka dot scarves that I’ve been wearing for years. And, in 2013, it will be easy for you to track down and start your own collection of stylish dotted dresses, tops, shoes, tights, and scarves in every color you crave.
Spots, as some people in the UK call them, are never out of fashion. And, year after year, dotted prints can be found on classic men’s ties, pink sunbonnets for little girls, navy-and-white satin blouses, and Larabee Road dinnerware by Kate Spade.
Polka Dots in Paris
I knew dots were going to be big when I saw one meticulously dressed (beyond-Boomer-aged) woman walking along a tony boulevard in Paris, last year. She was clothed in black from head to toe and wearing sheer black stockings with a pattern (similar to this sheer overlay). The effect was stunning. And, she was sexier than most 30 year olds, because all you noticed were her Tina Turner legs. Of course, my camera went dead just as she walked by, so you’ll have to take my word for it.
Polka Dots Are a Timeless Style
Want to upgrade one of your old, tired outfits you can hardly stand to look at? Well, you can give yourself a little touch of chic with a cute, gauzy, dotted scarf for spring / summer 2013. Actually, anything spotted will take you well past 2013, because most polka dot prints are timeless.
Some fabrics, with a diversity of dot sizes and colors, or with a unique composition (like swirls or zigzags), may not stand the test of time quite as well as standard polka dots marching in uniform rows, however if you find something you love and it has a non-regimental dot pattern, just get it.
All dotty prints will be in style for years. Hey, Minnie Mouse has been wearing polka dots for 70 years, but don’t use that cute little rodent as your muse.
Add Some Color with Polka Dot Accessories
Spring and summer always cry out for loud, bossy hues. Well, year-round black is fine in London, NYC, Seattle, and most large European cities, but unless you’ve decided to go Techno-Goth, it’s easy to make your standard black stand out from the crowd with inexpensive, easy-to-pop polka dots.
By just doing a cursory online search, you can find everything from:
- Polka Dot Rainboots at Target to Kate Spade's polka dot pumps.
- 'Ombré Polka Dot' Scarf at Nordstrom.com ($38) to Stella McCartney’s Large Dot-Print Scarf at NM ($460).
- Aldo Lindberg Shopper at Zappos ($40) to a blue-on-black Pretty Nylon Tate (tote) from Marc by Marc Jacobs ($208).
Every year you will find a different assortment of polka-dotted goodies, but every year (especially in spring), you are sure to see something in this timeless print. And, you can certainly wear dots year round. For example, the burgundy dot dress in the photo is for fall 2013. (article continues)
