Winter White Boots & Shoes for Women Over 70 (or 30) – Fall & Winter Trends to Wear All Through 2018 (and Beyond)
by Tina Boomerina (and Jessica)
Here’s another interview of my daughter’s fashionista friend, Jessica. Jess is a 30-something charmer, who dresses egotistical heiresses, hoity-toity TV stars, and wealthy wives of Beverly Hills honchos. I never know if I should be asking what the rich and famous (and old) wear, but it seems I can never stop myself. So, before I know it, I’m always asking Jess if she has any new fashion tips for women over 70. This time she said, “White Boots.”
Actually, the conversation was a little longer than that… but in the end… the REAL substance of the convo boiled down to, “Wear white ankle boots or white pumps.”
And, Jessica wants me to stress that white boots are a totally new, trendsetting style. Actually, she used the phrase "cutting edge," and she said it in a conspiratorial voice that leads me to believe she doesn't let everyone in on these types of secrets.
NOTE: Sorry about the models. I want you to see how people style white boots, but I do NOT want you to think Go Go boots are only for teenagers!
Buy White Ankle Boots and/or White Shoes Now
Fortunately, Jessica recorded most of her tips for me, so it’s easy to relay her ideas.
Note: I have put Jessica’s words in quotations, so you can distinguish her ideas from mine.
OK, my dear friends, even if you are old enough to remember WEARING Go Go boots in the Mod 60s, I want you to keep an open mind about white boots. The more you follow the white shoe trend, the more you are going to like… no love… white retro booties.
Fashion Tips for Women Over 70
Here is my interview with Jess. It started when I texted her:
Tina: Can you think of any new trends I can write about for women over 70?
Jessica: “Velvet clothes, velvet shoes, velvet handbags, velvet dresses, velvet blazers."
"Navy blue is basic and looks more expensive than black. (Velvet) pieces are something to buy right now that will carry over from fall into spring.”
Jessica: “Tips for women over 70? Have them do round Chloe sunglasses (oversized) and a structured bag. And, make sure to tell them to use blush.”
Jessica: “White boots and white pumps are big. I mean big NOW in fall and winter. The most important thing to get right now is a pair of white leather ankle boots.”
Tina: Are you saying older women should wear white ankle boots or are you talking about the trend in general?
Jessica: “Women over 70.”
White Ankle Boots for Older Women
Before we continue, I want you to know that, at first, I was extremely skeptical of Jessica’s advice about white ankle boots. I mean… Jessica is telling me to tell you to wear Go Go boots.
Is she serious?
Are the old and trendy fashionistas, the Iris Apfels of the West Coast, really running around in white booties? Are white boots a quick fad for rich, bored women who do nothing but shop? Is this something that women over 50… over 60… over 70… can wear without looking like they borrowed their granddaughters’ footwear?
Well, Jessica dresses lots of women over 70. Her job is to make old ladies (like me) look great in current... but flattering... outfits that are trendy enough for London, New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Hollywood. How can I NOT trust her judgment?
OK... I confess... it took me a while to get on the White Shoe Bandwagon, but after looking at street styles on Pinterest, I’ve decided Jessica was right. And…now... I WANT A PAIR OF GROOVY WHITE GO GO BOOTS for myself!
Still not sure about the moto jacket.
The Perfect Outfit for Women Over 70
Jessica then sent me a voice recording by email. I didn’t even know you could send recordings. So, with many thanks to Jessica, here are the recent tips she wants to give all fashionable Boomer women:
Jessica: “White boots are going to be even bigger than I thought. You should do a whole article on white boots and white pumps… sadly… because it was my thing… my signature style.”
Tina: You are the inspiration for the white footwear trend!
Jessica: “Everyone will be wearing white leather ankle boots. They are all over TV. They are all over.”
Jess explains an outfit she thinks will look hip and appropriate for women over 70. In reality, she is speaking to ALL OF US wonderful chickadees over 50.
Jessica: “You want to pair white boots with a white oversized coat or jacket, or maybe a sweater jacket."
Jessica: "The BEST thing would be a white leather motorcycle jacket. And, then I think black jeans or black slacks and a black, lightweight turtleneck.”
Jess continues telling you why this outfit on the right is perfect.
Jessica: “The white jacket is a good move for… it’s kind of a camouflaging… a flattering thing… because you match the boot to the jacket or the sweater.
Jessica: "White leather would be ideal. I have a white patent leather jacket I bought from a consignment store a while ago. That’s the kind of look you want.”
It took me a few minutes to understand what Jessica was trying to get at, because she words things delicately instead of blurting things out (like I do), but I confirmed what she meant later... because I needed to understand why she used the word “camouflage”.
Jess doesn’t want me to be gauche and insensitive, but I don’t know any other way to explain why she thinks you would look good in this black and white outfit.
So, I have to give you my brazen translation… and I’m sorry if you snowflakes are shocked, but I’m better at honesty than sensitivity.
Tina: Older women, like you and me, who are not a size zero (chubby), will almost always look good in a black turtleneck, black leggings, and a white jacket that’s left open… because the contrast creates an optical illusion. People will observe the white jacket and white boots because the white pops out when it’s next to the black, while the black part recedes, making you look skinnier.
The result is that you look like you have a tall, elongated, darkly covered body, due to the trick of high contrast. You can get this same effect using any two colors with high contrast, such as a light pink coat over midnight blue or a light metallic jacket over charcoal gray.
I couldn’t find an example of Jessica’s Outfit for Women Over 70, so I made a watercolor sketch to show the concept.
Note: I just realized that buttoning or zipping your white jacket doesn't change the optical illusion very much. The turtle part of your turtleneck will still show. Attention will still be drawn to everything white, however, people's minds will automatically fill in the blanks to connect the top of your turtleneck with the black of your leggings.
Trendy Details for Women Over 50, 60, 70
Later, Jessica sent me another note telling me more about the details you should incorporate to make this outfit truly hip and truly flattering.
Jessica: “I like high-neck black or dark turtlenecks or mock turtlenecks on older women. Turtlenecks are nice because sometimes women need to cover their necks.”
Then, Jessica says I shouldn’t write that part… but I left it in… because you already know some of the reasons you might want to cover your saggy neck.
Add a Chunky Pendant Necklace:
Jessica: “Turtlenecks should be worn with something like a pendant necklace… or a statement necklace… to light up your face. You want something solid. You want something good. It can be a cheaper stone, but for many daytime looks you want colorful beads or a pendant necklace.”
Tina: What about a bold silver necklace with a biker jacket?
Jessica: “Yes, another option is a faux (goldtone or silvertone) metal. It should be something solid, something bold. The focal point should hit the middle of the chest, probably above the breasts, and then you should layer a jacket over that. And, a bold necklace would be cute and modern when worn with a white jacket and booties. Older women can do white… and white is going to be THE BIG TREND.”
Jess sounds a little sad that women are copying her favorite style, but I tell her it's a compliment, and she'll come up with a new trend.
Jessica Explains Why White Boots are a Good Purchase
Jessica: “White is not a fad. HAVE YOUR READERS DO WHITE BOOTS with a white leather coat or white cardigan, because that’s THE THING right now and it’s so fun and chic and avant-garde because white in winter is so taboo-ish. And I think It would be a cute look.”
Tina: If you are a chic woman who feels she could never wear white ankle boots with heels, you can update any boring, ordinary outfit with: White pumps, white ballet flats, white slingbacks, white brogues, white mules, white Doc Martins, etc.
Just make sure your footwear is trendy enough that you don’t look like you are wearing orthopedic shoes… or maybe orthopedic granny shoes ARE the style. Who knows? Hipsters may have "discovered" orthopedic shoes in their neighborhood thrift store.
Other trendy boots and shoes that are almost as trendy as white: pale gray ankle boots, light silver ankle boots, baby pink ankle boots, and any bright footwear in random colors that match NOTHING in your outfit.
Extra Style Tips From Jess
Jessica: “Tell your readers to add a little volume to their hair if they can… but not overdone. Adding a little volume is important… because if you can add height to your crown, it does something to your face which is nice. If possible, get a blowout. People who can’t afford a good salon should find a way to do a blowout at home or have a friend help out.”
Tina: My hair is too thin. That's why I wear hats.
*Warning: Dangers of Dark Jeans and Black Leggings With White:
Jessica mentioned black leggings and black slacks a lot, and when I contacted her to find out if older women should try this look with dark jeans and a navy turtleneck, she said jeans or jeggings would be good… and then she FREAKED OUT a little and wanted me to give you the following warning:
Jessica: “Be careful with dark-washed denim and cheap black pants. Don’t wear a dark color next to a white leather jacket or a white purse unless you check that the color won’t bleed. I once wrecked a great white handbag that way."
(Her handbag was probably as much as I spend all year on fashion.)
Jessica: “To find out if dark clothing will ruin leather (or your white couch), rub it with a paper towel to see if there’s a color transfer. You should check expensive clothing, just to be safe.”
Thanks Jess. You just saved someone a lot of money.
White Leather, White Vinyl, White Patent Leather Accessories & Clothing:
Jess is right about Go Go boots.
I have checked out quite a few outfits online and on the tube. I promise you will look hip and avant-garde in white footwear in fall, in winter, and most definitely in spring and summer. Adding white boots or shoes to any outfit is the easiest way in the world to update your style and this trend is here to stay… well… it’s here for at least the next several years.
