Folk Fashion Trend in Plus Sizes: Vintage Styles for Modern Women

Read about folk fashion and how to find cute clothing in plus sizes

by Tina Boomerina (Christina Gregoire)

It’s easy to find folk-inspired clothing if you’re a size 4, but if you’re an average American woman (a size 14)… or a plus-sized chick… it’s a bit trickier to keep up with the latest fashion trends. And, as we all know, wearing a frumpy, dated outfit… when you’re heavy… is a double whammy. So, here are a few tips (and keywords) that will help you find hot folklore styles in your size. Romantic, bohemian clothing is huge for fall, winter, resort, spring… and beyond.

Hey, just because you’re a plus size, you don’t have to wear black all the time. A girl can have a little fun.

Folk-Inspired Fashion: The Bohemian Fairytale Continues

If you have been on Pinterest lately, you’ve probably seen all the photos of beautiful couture gowns and day dresses and sweaters and capes and coats with that fab, romantic, folkloric feel. The trend started a few years ago and the trend continues.

I’ve written a lot of articles about folk-inspired fashions, because I love the look, and because folk designs are so flattering to a woman’s curves. (Well, folk styles also make skinny chicks look curvy. I know all about that because I was a flat-chested twig in the early 70s… the last time folk was a major design inspiration.)

Folklore Couture Fall, Resort, Spring

The easiest way to get a feel for the trend is to look at photos on Pinterest or Google Images.

Well, the photos on this article are also helpful, but you might want to browse the catwalk pics that show up when you use various combinations of the following keywords, names, and phrases:

  • Folk, folklore, folktale, fairytale, fairy chic, couture, fall, resort
  • Woodland, forest, butterfly, owl, fox, deer, heritage florals, appliqués, embroidery, patchwork
  • Valentino resort, D&G fall (or any designer that comes to mind)

Folklore Styles for Real Women in Plus Sizes

I know you’re not going to spend a hundred thousand dollars (or pounds) on ballgowns and designer duds, but there are cute, inexpensive alternatives… in your size… with that same trendy, folkloric feel. And, I’m talking about tops and dresses you can wear to work in Seattle or out to dinner in the suburbs of Omaha.

The internet makes it so easy for you to shop all over the world without leaving your kitchen… so, that’s why I use photos of clothing from Europe, the US, and the UK.

And… I’m almost always able to find pics from stores that ship to the US, but every now and then, I show you examples of trendy outfits that can only be purchased in Europe. However, if you know the right keywords to type into the search box on any clothing site (in the US or elsewhere), you’ll be able to find the perfect folk-inspired fashions in your size.

Keyword List for Folk Fashion Searches

Stores in other parts of the world use different keywords for folk-style clothing than we use here. And, search engines on European sites don’t always work as well they do on American sites.

Sometimes, it can even be difficult to find “folk” clothing on US sites. I don’t think tech people know much about fashion. But, it's worth the extra BS to find cute clothes.

So, try various combinations of the following words and phrases when you’re doing an online search within a UK-based or an EU-based clothing site:

  • Folk, folklore, woodland, owl, and related words from the other list (above)
  • Plus size, curve, Taillissime (a brand)
  • Peasant, ethnic (French sites), gipsy, tunic
  • Geo print, paisley, border, embroidered, embellished, tapestry print
  • Fairisle, Nordic, knitwear, jumper (sweater), jumper dress, coatigan
  • Gilet (vest), kaftan, kurta

Folk Inspired Clothing in the UK and EU:

Remember that UK and EU sizes are different from US sizes. So, check to see which sizing is being used in the drop-down menu.

Also, check each site’s return policy. British and European sites often have a shorter time limit for returns and exchanges than similar sites in the US. However, as long as you’re aware of the difference, you won’t have a problem sending an item back within the allotted time, because almost everything can be shipped FedEx, just like in the states.

Plus Size Folk Art Inspired Clothing for Women

Even if you don’t think you’re ready to start dancing the Swedish polska or playing the Russian balalaika anytime soon, there are lots of great tops and dresses with folk art inspired prints and patterns that will infuse your wardrobe with a fresher, younger attitude… in a subtle, peripheral way.

Almost all of the keywords in this article can be used to find folklore clothing (and trendy plus-size brands) on any US website. However, you need to learn what folk-inspired clothing looks like because the good stuff isn’t always labeled correctly. Try checking a few sites and see what pops up. I’m sure you’ll find a few well-priced, plus-sized bohemian accents to perk up your basic black wardrobe… and it doesn’t cost anything to look… haha.

      Margaret,

If you mean the dress in the top (main) photo, you'll be able to find it on Marisota. If you don't see it there, try Simply Be. Make sure you're on the US site if you want US sizes.

would like to know if I can wear leggings and tops with my apple shape and plus size

  4. Tina-Boomerina

    Lorraine,

You have definitely come to the right place. And yes, you can definitely wear leggings if you're a plus size. I'm not sure I said it in this article but I'm an XL or 1X and I base my articles for apple shapes on what works for me. I've been an apple all my life even when I was a skinny teenager.

I can't guarantee that what I wear will look good on everybody, but it should work for most apple-shaped women.

I've never found jeans that were comfortable for me. When I was a teen, I sometimes wore my skinny boyfriend's jeans. They didn't fit right, but I could breathe.

Jeggings are the only "jeans" I can wear for more than an hour.

Here are my tips and I'm a plus. If you're a very large plus size, like extended size, you'll have to play with proportions and lengths of your tops. Boots give a finished look to leggings and chunky boots give your bottom half some weight... to balance your large upper half.

Hope this helps. I live in long skirts, long dresses, and tunics with leggings.

I really liked the article. The tunics sound like heaven no tightness in the bust so free feeling and cool. I can hardly wait to purchase some. I have been wearing some of my old stuff and when I get home, I jump right away into my jammies cause that is the only thing that feels comfortable these days. Which I feel is a shame with all of the great styles I see online. I have gotten a lot of ideas. Thanks so much.
