Orange Clothing for Summer and Fall: Surprise Fashion Trend
by Tina Boomerina (Christina Gregoire)
They say that men are attracted to women in red, but orange is just an edgier version of red. And, orange is a lot more fun. Hey, all women know that an orange top or dress is gorgeous with a summer tan, but… surprise, surprise… orange sweaters and coats are also fabulous for fall and winter.
I wear orange stuff year-round and this is a good time to look for orange summer clothing on sale.
Orange Clothing Gives Women a Lift
I wonder if there's ever been a study about the color orange. I swear that orange always cheers me up when I wear it.
If you don’t think you can wear orange, you should look at all the different shades on this page, from dark red-orange to neon orange to pinky tangerine to soft peachy coral or rusty pumpkin… I know there’s some shade of orange that will light up the complexion of every woman… even you.
There are so many different shades of orange. It seems as though we all visualize a different color when we hear the word. You might think of the bright color of an orange peel, or the yellow-orange hue of orange juice, or the softly sweet sight of peaches, or the true Crayola orange you colored with in kindergarten.
However, no matter what color you see in your mind, I have a feeling that you are visualizing a shade of orange that looks good on you.
Why would you remember a color you don’t love? For example, I think you’re more likely to remember the gorgeous tangerine-colored sweater you wore all through high school than to remember some horrid neon orange from an embarrassing Halloween outfit.
What Colors Go With Orange?
It’s surprising how well orange plays with other colors. If you know the color wheel, you’ll know that orange and blue are complementary colors, so an orange top really pops next to blue denim. Other colors I like with orange are pink, red, green, and purple.
Just make sure to pair colors with the same intensity… like dark with dark, bright with bright, dusky with dusky, or pastel with pastel. Okay, that last sentence is not a hard-and-fast rule, but it might help you play with colors if you don’t see the world as a series of color chips like I do.
Orange Print Dress or Top
A good way to discover what colors go well with any particular color is to look at clothing with printed fabric.
If you see a print you like, and it has a similar shade of orange, you can let the fashion designer do all the hard work for you. If you’re creative and artsy, just try various shades of orange with all the stuff in your closet. You will be surprised how many outfits look good with a dash of orange.
Be Careful Wearing Orange and Black
I do want to help you out with one little hint. Avoid wearing Crayola orange with black unless you’re going to a Halloween party. On the other hand, there are many shades of orange that look fabulous with black. The ones I like are deep red-orange, dusky pumpkin, soft peach... well, almost every shade of orange (with the exception of bright, true orange) looks good with black.
If you look great in true orange, try wearing it with brown or blue… or add some other colors to your ensemble to give your outfit a color-block look. A third color will keep your outfit out of the danger zone.
A Pop of Orange Accessories
If you’re getting dressed some morning and you realize your outfit is terribly blah – your outfit just isn’t doing anything for you – try adding an orange purse, an orange scarf, a pair of orange shoes, or a pair of orange sunglasses. Well, I would add an orange hat, so if you’re a hat freak, that’s another option.
However, that orange “whatever-it-is” doesn’t have to “go” with anything. You can add one orange thing to any ensemble and it will work.
Pink or yellow will sometimes perk up an outfit like orange does, but orange comes with a rock-solid guarantee that it will give a high-voltage, caffeinated jolt to any boring outfit you own. However, don’t wear orange from head to toe if you’re a wallflower… but why would you want to be a wallflower?
I Love Orange Clothing and Accessories
Orange rocks. I once owned a bright orange suede coat in high school during the late 60s, and I loved that coat. I wish I still had it… not that it would fit after having two children… as you can imagine.
That beautiful, belted midi coat was one of my all-time favorite possessions. It was so great that some chick stole it. I can’t remember if the coat was ripped off at a party or if someone rummaged through my closet while I was out, but I’m sure the woman who took it suffered bad karma every time she wore it. Well, I hope she did. (Note: I probably should edit out this part about my beautiful orange coat, but I’m not going to. I want you to know that I really do love wearing orange. I’m not just feeding you a line of BS.)
Well, I’ll let you go back to your online shopping. If you have a closet full of neutrals, like basic black, navy blue, brown, and beige, you need a swift kick in the tush. Get an orange printed scarf or a tangerine silk blouse or a dark orange patent-leather purse to rev up all that boring beige you like so much. Orange clothing and accessories are guaranteed to make you feel happy.
