Spring / Summer: Snake & Reptile Fashion Trend
by Tina Boomerina (Christina Gregoire)
My friend Kay loves to tell me about new trends she likes, and her latest love is rainbow reptile accessories. At first, I was like, “Ewww… snakes,” but then I realized that snakes are slithery and slinky and can make a woman feel all sexy and tribal… as in swinging through the African jungle with a hunk like Tarzan. So, be on the lookout for spring and summer clothing with reptile textures and prints, such as snake, lizard, alligator or crocodile.
Or, try wearing jewelry and accessories with the powerful symbol of Cleopatra – the asp.
Rainbow Reptile Accessories & Clothes for Spring/Summer 2014
Article by Kay Kerns
There is a strong trend towards reptilian fashion accessories for 2014. Things like crocodile and snakeskin never really go out of style, but they seem to be popping up in bright spring and summer colors, both faux and real. Some say snakeskin is trashy. I disagree. Snake is a lovely pattern and has a wonderful texture, with an effect akin to those other animal prints we love, such as leopard and tiger.
I own a bright red faux-alligator tote bag that two younger women have noticed and complimented, and I was shocked when a 16 year old liked it!
Plus-Sized Snakeskin Clothing: I also own a pair of black, white, tan, and orange snakeskin-print stretch leggings that look awesome peeking out between a long black tunic and my black faux-suede ankle boots. I wear these leggings with a lightweight, slightly bead-embellished, dark blue denim jacket, and I feel quite happy and comfortable in this cute plus-sized outfit.
Use Reptile as a Focal Point: Reptile is very eye-catching so it makes a fine focal point. It accents solid colors splendidly, mixes well with other patterns, and looks current and hip in neutrals or brights. So, add a touch of the exotic to your wardrobe.
Reptile is Versatile: Snake prints can be preppy or boho, classic or übertrendy. Brown crocodile belts and purses are a fashion classic and hot pink ones are trendy, but brightly colored and metallic leathers (and pleathers – man-made leathers) have been popular for the last 10 years or so. Reptile embossed accessories are more than just a one-season fad.
Also, the reptile trend is seen at all price points. It’s found everywhere from Walmart to expensive designer stores on Rodeo Drive. Personally, I love outrageous neon rainbow snakeskin, but that's just me. My favorite color is rainbow! The best finds are accessories that combine more than one trend... like a pastel-patchwork snakeskin wallet or a bright, shiny, purple crocodile weekend bag. I like over-the-top accessories.
Tortoiseshell: Turtles and tortoises are reptiles too. Tortoiseshell has always been a classic for accessories like hair barrettes and eyeglass frames. (It is actually made of plastic, so no animals have been harmed.) The warm brown and golden tones of tortoiseshell flatter everyone, especially those with warm complexions. Also, a nice tortoiseshell box can add a boho 'world traveler' vibe to any room.
Reptile Jewelry: Reptile-themed jewelry has been cropping up as well. Many of us have a favorite totem-type creature. I like geckos because I am from Hawaii. Others like turtles or snakes. Jewelry which has personal meaning is fun to collect and wear. You can find reptile accessories in a range of materials, from precious to plastic, serious to kitschy and fun.
Thrifting the Reptile Trend: Since Reptile has always been present in some form every year and every season, it's not too hard to find vintage and second-hand pieces. And, that’s great news for thrifters like myself. Look for colorful reptile clothing like you see in these photos or try to find classic snake and crocodile items in neutrals.
So walk on the wild side and rock some snake (or croc) clothing, fashion accessories, or decorative items. Reptile is one of the trendiest looks for spring and summer... and beyond.
