Wearable Spring Fashion Trends: 9 Ways to Add Color

4. Biker Jackets: You can still wear your black biker jacket, but when you need something more exciting than black, look for colored leather or faux-leather moto jackets. They come in different lengths and shapes. They also come in plus sizes, like the spring green moto jacket.

5. Bright Shoes or Boots: You can wear bright cobalt or red or pink or whatever with an otherwise all-black outfit. I’ve seen it done in Paris. It’s very chic, and it's an extremely cute trend. Just make sure you have small feet or wear shoes that make your feet look small... your feet usually look smaller when wearing heels.

6. Printed Skirts: Look for patterns ranging from tribal Aztec to floral Baroque. Printed skirts and leggings are good for balancing top-heavy apple shapes. Just make sure that the top doesn’t contrast with the skirt at the waist, and you might be better off with a tunic top over a pencil skirt. The right prints can be surprisingly flattering on pear shapes because some prints act as camouflage.

7. Colored Tights and Hosiery: Unless you’re trying to hide your legs, colored or printed tights are an inexpensive way to try out new ideas. Look for folkloric folk-patterns, zigzag chevrons, red tartans, wild (or subtle) florals, or plain opaque colors from brands like Hue or Merona. You can match your outfit and go all the same color from head to toe, or you can wear a color that contrasts with the rest of your outfit, just for fun. See the book Advanced Style for ideas about getting out of your boring comfort zone.

8. Mixed-Print Clothing: The easiest way to mix prints is to buy something that’s already mixed and matched for you. Use the colors and patterns in the top, dress, handbag, shoes, or whatever, as inspiration for the rest of your outfit. Don’t be afraid to pair small repeating patterns with wild prints. But, take this trend one step at a time… or you may go overboard… just like I do every now and then. (But, how else can I learn how to wear a new trend... unless I experiment with various ideas on my own body?)

9. Colorful Necklaces: This is for those of you who are afraid to wear color. Try taking baby steps. Well, one of those baby steps might include trying out a long, colorful necklace or pendant. After that, you can move up to a wild, boho bib or choker with colorful earrings. Hey, I love pearls with a passion, but sometimes they feel kinda boring.

There are lots of other trendy ways to add color: turquoise polka-dotted scarves, pink animal-print handbags, red rose-print sweaters, subtle tribal-print jeans, and more. I know you can do this. It takes a little courage to wear an outfit that’s not black or brown, even in spring, but it’s so much fun when some 30 year old comes up and says she loves your fashion style. It's so worth it.

Great read! Thank you for the wonderful insight. Would you kindly tell me where I can find the red oriental bomber jacket? It's gorgeous. Many thanks! And keep up the awesome work!

    Cheers

      Chan,

The bomber jacket is from M&S in the UK but they deliver to most countries. I hope they still stock it because I believe it might have been a limited edition item.

I would love to see models who are over 60. I am tall and thin, but I still feel odd wearing anything that might bring attention to myself. If I could see it on someone older, I think it would make all the difference.

    • Tina-Boomerina

      Nancy,

I would love to show models over 60. If you are tall and thin, you can wear anything... and I should hire you to be my model.

Oh, the things I would wear if I were tall and thin. I love standing out in a crowd. I would wear purple (or orange) from my chic hat to my Jimmy Choos and I would walk around Manhattan and people would turn around and stare and take photos of me for the second edition of the book, Advanced Style. You gotta get out of Kansas, babe, and make use of your height and your thin figure while you're still alive and kickin'. We would if we were you.

Thank you for sharing your insight for 'ladies of a certain age' that don't want to perpetually style the decade in which we went to High School...

It helps to have your humorous moral support, so I can be somewhat trendy with out looking like an utter fool.

    • Tina-Boomerina

      Kerry,

Well, I hope that what I wrote helps you. Some days I look like an utter fool, but I'm always trying new things... always experimenting. Sometimes I look great... for my age. Sometimes I look "different" but I never give up.

Please tell me where I can get the floral skirt under the bright shoes or boots section. I'm in love!

    • Tina-Boomerina

      Zil,

Sorry for the delay. The skirt is from Awear in the UK. I don't know about delivery to the US (if you live in the US) and I'm sorry that I don't have time to help you right now because there is a family emergency. Try googling Awear or Awear clothing or Awear.co.uk or Awear.com. Normally I could help you more, but I can't right now.

Sources for the hot pink jacket and skirt pictured separate. Love. Thanks for the article!

  7. Tina-Boomerina

    Barbara,

Hot pink jacket is Debenhams in the UK. They ship to the states. Which skirt? I'll email you.

      The skirt shown with #6.
Thanks for the jacket source :)

      • Tina-Boomerina

        Barbara,
Sorry about the delay. Family Emergency - I was out of town. The skirt is from Awear in the UK. I'll email you. I don't have time to check, but I'm not sure if they ship to the US. Look for something called "shipping" "delivery" "international shipping" or something like that. It's often on the lower left or bottom of the page... sometimes on the top. I just don't have time at this moment. Let me know if you find the skirt or the shipping info. Several people have asked.
        Thanks,
        Tina
