Kate Middleton Blue is Still Hot for Fall & Winter

cobal blue, sapphire blue, electric blue, deep blue

There are a zillion ways to wear Kate Middleton blue this fall.  But, what do you call that deep, intense, rich color we associate with Kate Middleton’s Issa Dress? Royal blue? Sapphire? Cobalt? No, really. What is it?

Blue Color Names at Nordstrom.comcobalt blue, electric blue, sapphire blue, dark blue jumper sweater

There’s a veritable cottage industry that’s developed from the naming and renaming of this single hue. Here are a few examples from the Nordie's website:

  • The Jewel-Tone System: sapphire, cobalt, lapis, amethyst, tanzanite
  • The Aristocratic Group: royal blue, regal blue, imperial blue
  • The H2O Babies: marine, ultramarine, Adriatic, lake, water, tide pool
  • The Uber Trendy Names: ultraviolet, electric blue, hot blue, vivid blue, Bauhaus blue

Well, my computer just crashed. So, I now want to call it:

  • HewlettPackardRebootMenu blue

This new name has a pissed-off edginess to it… don’t you think? Anyway... the point is that all these names are used for the same blue or for some very similar kate-like blue.

Kate Middleton’s Royal Blue Dress

Well, most of us have decided that it's easiest to call it Kate Middleton blue. Okay, we probably should update the name to Catharine, Duchess of Cambridge blue, but what a freaking mouthful!  Or, maybe we could revamp the British peerage system and give her a snappier title like Royal Dollface. I like Royal Dollface blue.

Accck! You know what color I mean. Or, do you? The hue seems to change in different lighting, on different fabrics. It’s the color of a chameleon swimming in the Med near Mykonos on a sunny day… okay?  It’s blue. It’s intense. It’s pure. It’s lovely… and it’s a classic.

Electric Blue for Fall

Kate Middleton blue has become a staple… almost a neutral.  Hey, I just bought a cobalt blue hobo bag, for God’s sake, and I’m not even a “blue person”, but after the initial shock wore off… I found I really loved the color.

Anyway, now I have a blue purse and it’s the only blue thing I have in my closet. So, what does that color go with? (article continues)
