Best Jeans: 5 Denim Trends for Fall and Winter

by Tina Boomerina (Christina Gregoire)
Lucky Baby Boomer Chicks! This fall you’re going to have a bazillion jean options to choose from: high rises, low waisteds, tight skinnies, flared retros, cuffed croppeds, accck… this can be confusing. Fortunately, you have me to make your choices easier… not!
What I mean is: I’ll do my best to help you, but I’m going to be honest, not every woman can wear some of these hot denim styles. And, I’m not sure which types of jeans will look good on you because I don’t have a pic of your nekkid bod in front of me… and I don’t want a pic of your nekkid bod in front of me, so don’t send any. Please.
What Shape is Best for You?
You’re gonna have to throw some darts at your screen and order a few random shapes to see what the different styles look like on your body type. Trust me. I just helped my 27-year-old daughter look for jeans. You’re gonna know right away if the style is wrong for you because you’ll break out in hives... if you don't break out in hives, you've found a style you can wear.
Not that my daughter or I got hives. Every single pair of jeans looked great on my kiddo. I’m just imagining what some of those high-waisted skinny jeans would have done to my ego if someone pointed a staple gun at my butt and forced me into a dressing room with a stack of denim… I know I would have sprained my wrist trying to pull those zippers up.
1. Skinny Jeans for Fall - Women's Denim
If your humongous hips keep whispering something like, “Skinny jeans must die… skinny jeans must die,” move on to section 4.
If you’re a top-heavy apple-shaped woman (... like a marshmallow on two toothpicks), you might actually fall in love with skinny jeans. Well… if not skinny jeans, maybe denim leggings (jeggings) or something that stretches in the tummy area, like maternity skinny jeans. I haven’t actually tried maternity jeans, but I keep telling myself to look at “shapes” not “labels”, and I might give them a go someday. I’m too old to get pregnant, but I’m not too old to remember Lamaze, and I do like to breathe.
If you decide to try some skinny jeans (or boyfriend jeans), you will still have a few other decisions to make. Well, more than a few… you’ll have to go through a veritable pop quiz of decisions. For one thing, there are a lot of choices in lengths and hems. All of the following styles are superbly on-trend for fall and winter:
- Regular Length Skinny Jeans: Perfect with boots and booties. Roll them up for a change of pace.
- Cropped Ankle Jeans: Sexy skin will show off cute shoes.
- Roll-Up Skinny Jeans: Go for pre-cuffed or roll your own.
- Roll-Up Boyfriend Jeans: Baggy boyfriend jeans must be rolled up or they'll look dowdy.
I don't wear jeans so this whole thing boggles my mind. I guess I'm going to have to get back into them.
3. Printed Denim and Colored Denim
More decisions. There are all kinds of cool patterns and textures to play with this fall, so here are the trendy denims to embrace... or shun.

Well written article with great pictures that I enjoyed reading. Denim is my fabric of choice and I love it! Do you know where the Leopard Jacket in the last picture might be purchased?
Tina
Daphne,
The leopard jacket is from Next in the UK. I'm not sure if they've gone international yet or if they ship to the US, but many UK sites do. Sorry, don't have time to check. try googling Next UK or Next.co.uk then look under shipping = that's where it usually is.
Cheers,

Great practical info as always I love wild crazy fashion but try on everything with a very critical eye....that tip about being an apple shape and using maternity fashions is right on...I always check the maternity clothes rack at any thrift store I shop because i'v e found great stuff even though I'm not going to be pregnant any time soon
Tina
Kay,
That's great advice. Great to know. I've never tried maternity jeans or tops but my body changed (for the worse) after taking prednesone... anyone who's ever had that will know exactly what I mean. I see so many cute things online and they say maternity... so I may have to try something. And, if I'm thrifting, I will definitely try maternity jeans. Why the hell not? Just remove the tags if you think anyone will see them.
Cheers,

Loved this! The only thing you missed (IMHO) is the importance of spandex in denim. I can't stand to wear jeans anymore that don't have any stretch. I think NYDJ spoiled me. Oh, and I completely agree about distressed jeans, they just look silly on boomer women, like we're trying too hard to look as cool as our daughters. But I still love the boyfriend jean rolled up this season.
Tina
Vicki,
How could I forget to mention spandex? Thank you. And, you're right about everything else, too. IMO.
