More Plus Size Swimsuits for Pear Shapes

Coco Reef Maui Mix Tankini: I am loving this. It will balance your big hips, but it might also be good for someone like me because it draws the eye up to the sexiest parts. (Here, you can see the high-contrast principle in action. Your eye is drawn to the black-and-white print. And, there is very little contrast between the pink-and-blue print and her skin.) There are several versions of this tankini, but I love this.

And, I think it would look great on pear shapes, because it would look like hell on me, and I’m as opposite of a pear shape as anyone can be. I love this cut. I wouldn’t even worry about where the skirt will hit because your eye is totally drawn to the diagonal line where the black skirt hits the printed bodice. I think this is really sexy. If I were a pear shape, I would probably try this… but you know your body better than I do.

Curvy Hourglass Shape or Large Bust

If you are an hourglass shape, your main concern is usually finding a swimsuit with enough underwire support.

All of my curvy pals (you know… gals with an hourglass shape) love Miraclesuits. And, no one in my age group ever says anything good about swimsuits. So, I would start with those.

Here are the Miraclesuits that I can imagine my most curvalicious friend wearing… and these also are the suits that I think would be most flattering overall… if you aren’t dealing with a top-heavy or bottom-heavy body:

  • Miraclesuit Caliente Solid: The front of this is so flattering and the color is good for most skintones.
  • Miraclesuit Sonatina Solid: Actually, the ruching on this might make it suitable for apple shapes as well as for hourglass shapes. You’ll never know until you try it on.

Before ordering a swimsuit online, check the website’s return policy because swimsuits are always tricky to fit. Smart women will not make a bathing suit purchase unless the site stands behind its products, so look around for a trusted website.

No matter what skinny fashionistas say, black may or may not be the best color for girls with large hips or large tummies. Black swimsuits need to be a perfect fit. If a black swimsuit meets pale skin at the wrong point, the high contrast will draw attention to that area. The only way to know if a swimsuit is right is to try it on… And, that’s why good websites give us return labels.

Of course, you can always take the advice of my fashionista daughter. She says that two of the best tricks for looking chic at the pool or at the beach are wearing a dark, sheer sarong and 3-carat fake diamond earrings so that people will look at your face and not your body. Sounds like good advice to me.

I'm an apple who would rather be a pear - but maybe just because I haven't been a pear yet. I agree about the gortex in the suits, but have to disagree with Oprah about black. Not for me. Too dreary. I like prints and bright bathing suits.

    Evelyn,

I would rather be a pear, too. And, I hate black swimsuits. They make me look all ashen and dead. They're okay if I have a real tan, but I can't do that anymore because I de-wrinkled my face about 10 years ago and I can't spend much time in the sun. I'm okay for short periods if I wear a huge sunhat... which I always do.

    Cheers,

AlwaysForMe.com has some lovely swimsuits in colorful solids and prints. Plum is a great alternative to black and looks fabulous on every skin tone. You can shop their site by body type to find the most flattering shape for your silhouette. Quality fabric and control panel linings make the most of your curves.

Great advice! Being plus sized should never stop you from looking the best you can on the beach. Find a suit that flatters your shape while allowing you to be as comfortable as possible. Try a few on and ensure that the fit and look is just right for you and your unique body.

    Julia,

I was skinny all my life until I had to take some horrid meds that made me blow up like a balloon. I never thought about plus sized swimwear until recently.

    Dear Tina Boomerita,
I am an apple body shape, who like you is also long-waisted. I don't find tankinis as better options because the two inches of skin that shows between the top and the bottom is my worst part. ugh. Any suggestions on where to find Long one-piece suits?
    Thanks!

    LisaLou,

I used to wear a brand called Longitudes. I think they still exist. If not, let me know.

Just want to say I am a mature "senior" 0f 70 yrs.
and am taking water aerobic classes. Your are
so right about the right colors. I am fair skinned,
gray hair, and navy, purple, wine,(or eggplant)
are best for me. Skirts do not work well for
water exercise as they fly up. Finding the right
suit is hard Empire for my short wait is better.
    Enjoyed your well written article.

      Lucinda,

I'm glad you liked the article. I'm hoping that designers will read about the plight of apple-shaped women and give us more designs made for US!!!!

Apple-shaped (with a boy-shaped body and boobs) is how I was born. And, as all women get older, their bodies will become more apple shaped because they will have less estrogen in their bodies... or something like that... I'm not a scientist, but I think that's the reason.

Looking for something like in that 2nd photo (black/white/violet). Any idea where I could find that one?

  11. Tina-Boomerina

    Sara,

That swimsuit is from LaRedoute.com (French brand with UK/American site). Try La Redoute or Marisota.com. Sorry this took so long to approve your comment. Anyway, that swimsuit is from spring 2013 (when I wrote this article). I need to write a current article on this topic. Double check sizing on La Redoute if you find something because it may be UK sizes... or EU sizes.

This is the most honest blog post I've seen about bathing suits for baby boomer women. I the tips are just guidelines, but in the end you gotta try the suit on. It helps to know what looks good on certain body types and we can take it from there. I guess the manufacturers aren't going to use models with cellulite, they all look so taunt and smooth, but at least there are more choices today for older women than a few years ago.
