More About Swimsuits for Apple Shapes

Well, I've perused a few sites, and so far, The Best Swimsuits for Apple Shapes... an article that no long exists... at the scary-sounding Fitness Magazine... has the best info. Well, they give the same ideas that work for my apple bod and might work for your apple physique:

  • plus size swimsuit purpleApples are top heavy, so make sure your swimsuit supports your ta-tas.
  • Get a swimsuit that visually separates your boobies from your stomach. This means that your best style probably has an “empire” waist... or a seamline that goes under your boobies.
  • Look for ruching, draping, and/or tummy control. Duh.
  • Try to find a bathing suit with a deep V-neck. A deep neckline will draw attention up to your “girls” and away from your pot... umm tummy.

Okay, I embellished some... I used more colorful language than anyone at Fitness Magazine would ever use in public.

Now, go to the photo in the link above. If you look like the woman in the photo, don’t buy the red swimsuit they show. After telling you what to buy, they put that woman in a suit that doesn’t give her enough support. That red bathing suit is almost right, but when you’re older, you need a higher-quality suit.

It’s possible that the suit looks better in real life, but that red fabric just doesn’t look heavy enough to me. If you could change the fabric, the style of that red swimsuit is fab. Also, I might like it better in a print… even if it’s just a soft watercolor ombre type of thing… anything to move your eyes around and keep people from staring at your well-post-pregnancy paunch.

Aerin Rose Swimsuits

I'm glad I looked over some of the swimsuits recommended by Fitness Magazine, because I got turned on to Aerin Rose (a line that’s sold by bra size.) So, I bopped over to a few websites to check out what they’ve got for fat tums like me… and here are the styles that I think would look good on my bod:

plus size tankini for women over 50 60 Aerin Rose Feathers Tankini and High Waist Swim Bottom: I wish this suit had more of a v-neck, but I’m groovin’ on the hippie pattern. And, I think this pattern will put my critics into a zen-like trance… so that they (hopefully) think about something other than my tummy.

Aerin Rose Tangiers Tankini: I might like this pattern even more, and I could wear it with my old La Blanca bottoms. This print reminds me of the good ole days when I lived in Kailua, Hawaii (1969.) Man oh man, I think that half the things in my closet in 1969 were covered with paisley. You know… the more I look at what has been discontinued, the more I think that some of the plunging-neckline styles may not give enough boobie support. And, I am probably going to try one of these two styles when I get up enough nerve. (I REALLY hate trying on swimsuits.)

Other good brands and styles that look like they’d be good for apple shapes are:

Always for Me Chic Print: Yeah, I think I wore this as a mini dress in the 60s… and now I’m ready to swim in it. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

plus size bathingsuits for old womenMiraclesuit Ambassadress: I love the little cutout notch in the neckline... as long as the notch doesn't poke into your ta-tas. Hey, that notch draws the eye to the best part of any apple chick's body… and as long as the fit is right, there should be enough lift to make this drapey-front swimsuit a go. This swimsuit comes in other colors.

Miraclesuit Rosswell Tankini Top: I like the front drape of this top and I can get a better fit in tankinis than I can with one-piece swimsuits. That’s because I’m long waisted and I have a small butt (proportionately.) My husband loves to tell me that it’s not that small anymore – should I tell him about his beer belly? Right… it’s no use. He still thinks he’s that 30-year-old guy in the photo he posted on Facebook – the guy with a tan and with abs… some guy I’ve never met. haha...

Any chickadee, who can fit into a size 14 or size 16, will love La Blanca. La Blanca seems to specialize in designs that disguise tummies.

I'm an apple who would rather be a pear - but maybe just because I haven't been a pear yet. I agree about the gortex in the suits, but have to disagree with Oprah about black. Not for me. Too dreary. I like prints and bright bathing suits.

    Evelyn,

I would rather be a pear, too. And, I hate black swimsuits. They make me look all ashen and dead. They're okay if I have a real tan, but I can't do that anymore because I de-wrinkled my face about 10 years ago and I can't spend much time in the sun. I'm okay for short periods if I wear a huge sunhat... which I always do.

AlwaysForMe.com has some lovely swimsuits in colorful solids and prints. Plum is a great alternative to black and looks fabulous on every skin tone. You can shop their site by body type to find the most flattering shape for your silhouette. Quality fabric and control panel linings make the most of your curves.

Great advice! Being plus sized should never stop you from looking the best you can on the beach. Find a suit that flatters your shape while allowing you to be as comfortable as possible. Try a few on and ensure that the fit and look is just right for you and your unique body.

    Julia,

I was skinny all my life until I had to take some horrid meds that made me blow up like a balloon. I never thought about plus sized swimwear until recently.

    Dear Tina Boomerita,
I am an apple body shape, who like you is also long-waisted. I don't find tankinis as better options because the two inches of skin that shows between the top and the bottom is my worst part. ugh. Any suggestions on where to find Long one-piece suits?
    Thanks!

    LisaLou,

I used to wear a brand called Longitudes. I think they still exist. If not, let me know.

Just want to say I am a mature "senior" 0f 70 yrs.
and am taking water aerobic classes. Your are
so right about the right colors. I am fair skinned,
gray hair, and navy, purple, wine,(or eggplant)
are best for me. Skirts do not work well for
water exercise as they fly up. Finding the right
suit is hard Empire for my short wait is better.
    Enjoyed your well written article.

I am apple body shaped. I really liked your article. Well described I am totally agree with your article :)

      Lucinda,

I'm glad you liked the article. I'm hoping that designers will read about the plight of apple-shaped women and give us more designs made for US!!!!

Apple-shaped (with a boy-shaped body and boobs) is how I was born. And, as all women get older, their bodies will become more apple shaped because they will have less estrogen in their bodies... or something like that... I'm not a scientist, but I think that's the reason.

Looking for something like in that 2nd photo (black/white/violet). Any idea where I could find that one?

  11. Tina-Boomerina

    Sara,

That swimsuit is from LaRedoute.com (French brand with UK/American site). Try La Redoute or Marisota.com. Sorry this took so long to approve your comment. Anyway, that swimsuit is from spring 2013 (when I wrote this article). I need to write a current article on this topic. Double check sizing on La Redoute if you find something because it may be UK sizes... or EU sizes.

This is the most honest blog post I've seen about bathing suits for baby boomer women. I the tips are just guidelines, but in the end you gotta try the suit on. It helps to know what looks good on certain body types and we can take it from there. I guess the manufacturers aren't going to use models with cellulite, they all look so taunt and smooth, but at least there are more choices today for older women than a few years ago.
