Thank a Boomer

While there are many things that Gen-Xers can legitimately hate about Baby Boomers, there are a lot of good ideas that Boomers forced into mainstream consciousness, and there are a lot of innovations that came about due to Boomer creativity.

Social Issues

Feel free to thank a Boomer after reading this.

Women’s Rights:

Baby Boomers were the first generation to widely embrace gender equality. Before the 1970s, there were three occupations deemed suitable for women. Females could become secretaries, nurses, or teachers. Oh, they could also become librarians, as long as they didn’t aspire to working in law libraries.

Racial Equality:

If they still teach you anything in school, you already know that Baby Boomers fought for racial equality. No, Boomers weren’t the first generation to see beyond skin color, but they were the generation that forced the issue. Those of you in Gen X who have friends of a different race should thank a Boomer for the chance to have a little diversity in your life. White bread is boring.

Conscription:

Gen X men who only use the term “draft” while speaking about beer or football, should thank a Boomer for getting rid of forced military conscription in the US. If Boomer men and women hadn’t gone out and gotten teargassed to hell and back, you guys would have ended up being called to duty instead of sitting on your mom's couch playing the “Call of Duty” video game.

Clean Air:

We were the generation that started Earth Day. And, even if you aren’t a rabid tree-hugger, you probably like breathing clean air and showering in toxin-free water.

Trends, Fads, and Movies

You have no idea how constricting life was before Boomers came along to shake things up.

School Clothes:

Men who missed out on the fun of wearing a stifling shirt and tie to school every day should kiss the ground that Boomers walk on. And, the same goes for you Gen X babes. Boomer Chicks, like me, protested archaic rules of dress by donning miniskirts that came above the middle of our knees; and during snowstorms we dared to wear slacks to school. Many girls were sent home for both forms of rebellion. (And, this was long before students of either sex ever considered wearing jeans to class.)

Rap and Hip Hop Music:

You might think that Boomers were only responsible for the shrill feedback of psychedelic Rock & Roll and the droning beat of disco, but according to Wikipedia, DJ Hollywood, “the first rapper in the hip-hop style” was born in 1954. So, “Throw ya hands into the air and wave ‘em like you just don’t care.” Hey, without Ice-T, Grandmaster Flash, and some of the tail-end Boomers from Run-DMC, Public Enemy, and the Beastie Boys, you might be dancing all night to Doo-Wop.

Movies:

Obviously, without Baby Boomer, Steven Spielberg, you wouldn’t have had the intense images of Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Jurassic Park burned into your consciousness. And, a few other cool movies were directed by Boomers, including Back to the Future, Pulp Fiction, When Harry met Sally, Twilight, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Finally, where would you go to meet up with your pals if some Baby Boomers hadn’t invented Starbucks? Sure, Boomers did some bad things like introducing drugs to suburbia, but we also made everyone's lives a lot more interesting than they were before we became teenagers and took over the world.

If you are reading this article on the internet, feel free to thank a Boomer. Who do you think started Microsoft, Apple, and Cisco? And, because of these innovations made by Boomers, you can leave a rant if you want.
